Following my work on the Columbus Education Foundation, it occurred to me that similar support was needed for Columbus Independent School District (CISD) athletic programs, which may have fallen short in optimum funding. These shortfalls likely have occurred at all grade levels, K-12.  As a physician and parent, I am fully aware of the benefits of physical activity at all ages. Younger children very much need breaks from the classroom to engage in physical activities, which give them an outlet for their childhood exuberance that, in turn, leads to improved classroom focus and achievement.

Our older children move on from playground to organized and competitive physical activities, usually channeled through the many athletic programs offered by the CISD. Those programs require significant funding, and that expenditure sometimes falls short, hence the need for outside financial support. The Columbus Cardinal Athletic Foundation strives to build a corpus of funds that generates an income to share with CISD athletic programs for years to come.

It is my belief that thousands of young people’s lives have benefitted from the discipline, teamwork, and dedication demanded in these athletic endeavors, those qualities being essential building blocks in character development. Our children’s success in life will very much rely on the intellectual and character attributes developed while they attend CISD.
